Ingredients
  

For the cake layer:

  • 1 chocolate cake store-bought or homemade
  • Optional: Coffee or simple syrup to moisten cake

For the chocolate mousse:

  • 200 g dark chocolate 70% cocoa
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the whipped cream:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Garnishes:

  • Shaved chocolate
  • Chocolate chips
  • Fresh berries e.g., raspberries or strawberries

Instructions
 

Prepare the cake layer:

  • If using a homemade chocolate cake, bake according to your recipe and allow it to cool completely.
  • If using store-bought cake, slice it into small cubes or strips. You can also drizzle the cake with a little coffee or simple syrup to add moisture.

Make the chocolate mousse:

  • Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or in the microwave in short bursts, stirring until smooth. Let it cool slightly.
  • In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  • Gently fold the melted chocolate into the whipped cream until combined and smooth.

Assemble the trifle:

  • In a large trifle bowl or individual glasses, layer the ingredients: Start with a layer of cake cubes, followed by a layer of chocolate mousse, and then a layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layers until the bowl is filled, finishing with whipped cream on top.

Chill the trifle:

  • Refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least 2 hours or overnight to allow the layers to set.

Garnish and serve:

  • Before serving, top the trifle with shaved chocolate, chocolate chips, or fresh berries for extra decoration and flavor.
